EMT

Our EMT program is approximately 12 weeks long. It employs several educational types to ensure that our students have many opportunities to study and receive information in as many different learning environments as possible to make them successful.

The typical EMT class includes online, self-paced instruction with access to PowerPoint-type visual aids, audiobooks, and practical scenarios to help our students internalize the material quickly and permanently. The material is divided into sections corresponding to the National Registry testing subscales of Preparation, Airway Management, Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma, Special Populations, and EMS Operations. After completing each study chapter in their textbooks, a chapter quiz measures their understanding of that material. Following completion of each module, an overall examination of the module's combined concepts is taken to integrate the chapters into a comprehensive body of knowledge. These modular exams are scheduled specifically to maintain the students' pace to completion. The material is self-paced within each module, but the exams are scheduled to keep the students moving forward and retaining the information.

Approximately halfway through the course, the class members will come together to learn the skills necessary to perform as an EMT over one weekend. Each skill will be taught and practiced with peer and instructor review and verification prior to any field rotations being scheduled. When you go to the ambulance for precepted patient contact, you will have all the skills necessary to care for the patients you will encounter.

At the three-quarter mark of the class, you will have an opportunity to spend 96 hrs on a Houston Fire Department Basic Ambulance for a field internship. You will ride out on one of HFD's basic ambulances with HFD members acting as instructors and monitors while you practice your skills and assessments in providing care to 911 patients in the City of Houston. The preceptors will guide you and evaluate your actions while assuring that the patients you encounter still receive the high-quality care HFD provides.

Following completion of these segments, (didactic, skills, and internship), you will take a series of comprehensive examinations that will prepare you for the National Registry of EMTs registration examination. Successfull completion of all segments and these exams will qualify you to sit for the NREMT test.

Successful completion of the NREMT exam will allow you to register for Texas state EMT certification.

Our Next class begins January 13th, 2025.
